Charles Jarnigan

Charles E. Jarnigan, 71, of Peru, IN, passed away at his home on July 15, 2023. He was born on September 11, 1951, in Nettleton, MS, to the late Cornelius Jarnigan and Alberta Mae (Walton)  Wilson. After completing his education, graduating from Peru High School, Charles had a strong work ethic, working for many years on the railroad as a brakeman and conductor for Norfolk Southern. He also had many joys in life, including gardening and tending to his roses, fishing, riding his motorcycle, and traveling especially to the beach and mountains. Charles was also an avid reader with a contagious laugh and smile that spread wherever he traveled. His greatest joy in life was being a loving and caring father, grandfather, son, brother and uncle to his family, who will all miss him very much.

Charles’ children will always cherish the life lessons he taught them and how he supported them all throughout the many accomplishments and difficulties of their lives.

Charles is survived by his children, Tina (Ben) Lipply of Whitestown, IN, Oko Nayati Hartleroad of Palatka, FL, and Charles Hartleroad of Peru, IN; nine grandchildren, Jasmine Penny, Antonio Penny, Nakeya Penny, William Penny, Oko Nayati Hartleroad II, Kenda Lyn Hartleroad, Jaelyn Hartleroad, Chase Shives, and Vaden Hartleroad; five great-grandchildren, Janae, Makhi, Makari, Tru, and Paisley; as well as many beloved nephews and nieces.

In addition to his parents, Cornelius Jarnigan and Alberta Mae Wilson, he was preceded in death by his brother, Arthur Jarnigan; and four sisters, Dorothy Sykes, Diane Wilson-Hatcher, Joyce Ann Smiley, Gloria Jean Spearman; as well as his stepfather, Richard Wilson.
