Peru

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Karen Sue Swinford, 81, of Peru, Indiana. Surrounded by her loving family, she passed away peacefully on February 25, 2026.

Karen was born on April 8, 1944, to Winston and Lucille (Mascoe) Hill in Noblesville, Indiana. To know Karen was to know joy. She brought light, laughter, and a touch of whimsy wherever she went. Her unapologetic authenticity, off-the-wall comments, and quick wit instantly brightened any room. Her family will forever remember her animated facial expressions, her ability to find humor in nearly anything, and the love and joy she shared so freely with those closest to her.

Karen had a special way of savoring life’s little joys, often spending hours watching the birds and deer in her yard. She delighted in cooking for her family and creating intricate embroidery, filling her home with laughter and playful sounds that made everyday life so memorable. Her boundless creativity could turn the simplest materials into treasures, especially for her grandchildren, whose handmade keepsakes remain cherished reminders of her love. And somehow, no matter the hat, she always looked absolutely adorable wearing it.

She is survived by her devoted husband of 65 years, Steve Swinford; her children, Tammy Swackhamer and her husband, Philip, with their children Nena Strassburg and Brittany; and Steve Swinford Jr., with his children Stacey Westfall, Steven, Shawn, Shane, and Stephanie Finney; grandson Gary Wayne Swinford; and her sister-in-law, Tracy Swinford. Karen also leaves behind several beloved great-grandchildren.

Karen was preceded in death by her parents; her children, Starrlea and Gerald Swinford; brothers Gordon and Gerald Hill; sister Judy Smith; and her grandson, Dustin Bradley Barker Swinford.

Her family will forever remember her big, squeezy hugs, her enormous, contagious laugh, and signature phrases, “Good show!” and “La-de-da.” Whether she was spilling a plate of food down her shirt, making everyone laugh with a perfectly timed comment, or simply lighting up a room with her presence, Karen’s warmth, humor, and joy were impossible to miss. Her love, laughter, and playful spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.

Karen’s online guestbook is available, and condolences can be shared with the family at www.riverviewfhperu.com Arrangements have been entrusted to Riverview Funeral Home, 421 W. Canal St., Peru, IN.
